Hardware and Software

Learning Objectives
You will learn:

what computers are
how computers work
what assembly language is.

Task 1

As a class, brainstorm the question “What is a digital computer?”
In pairs, ask pupils to list as many different types of digital computers as possible.

Read the following link:

Define a digital computer as an automatic, programmable data processor. As a class, discuss each part of the definition.

What does digital mean?
Digital means that the computer only understands the binary quantities that take two values, 1 or 0. Mention that other types of computer do exist, including the quantum computer (which pupils will learn more about later in the course), and show a picture of a quantum computer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:DWave_128chip.jpg

What does automatic mean?
Automatic means that it operates without human intervention, except where human intervention is planned.

What does programmable mean?
Programmable means that the computer follows instructions that are stored as a program.

What does data processor mean?
Data processor means that the computer does things with data.
Explain that computers are made up of two components: hardware and software. Ask pupils if they can define these components. Hardware is the physical components that make up a computer. Software is the programs that can be run on the computer.
Task 2

Divide the following
Sort the things in this list according to whether they are hardware or software.
